Curator Review
Verdict
A big-hearted, crowd-pleasing campus comedy with real emotional stakes, 3 Idiots blends slapstick, romance, and a sharp critique of rote education into a highly rewatchable mainstream hit. Its runtime is long, but the momentum, performances, and payoff make it easy to recommend.
Best for
viewers who like feel-good comedies with a message
fans of friendship-centered ensemble stories
people interested in Indian mainstream cinema
audiences who enjoy underdog stories about education and ambition
Skip if
you want a tight, short comedy
you dislike broad humor and melodrama
you prefer subtle social critique
you are allergic to sentimental crowd-pleasers
Overview
3 Idiots is one of those rare commercial films that manages to be goofy, sincere, and genuinely pointed at the same time. It turns engineering college into a pressure-cooker farce, then keeps widening its scope into a critique of how families, institutions, and status anxiety crush curiosity and joy.
Worth noting
What makes it work is the chemistry of the central trio and the film’s easy confidence in switching from prank comedy to romance to tearjerker without losing its audience. The jokes are broad, but the emotional beats land because the movie understands exactly what kind of pressure its characters are under.
Bottom line
It is also very much a mainstream crowd-pleaser, so the sentiment can get big and the runtime can feel generous. But if you’re in the mood for an energetic, accessible film about friendship, learning, and refusing to live someone else’s life, it delivers with real force.

When I first watched this film, I was thirteen–a naive little boy captivated by this immensely entertaining three-hour flick. I didn’t really think much of this than a fun family movie about aspirations and dreams, not really minding its implications and what not. Now, I am at a mature-ish age of twenty, currently taking an engineering degree at one of the most renowned universities in my country, and revisiting this film has never been more relevant than ever. Umpteenth viewing.
Words will really never be enough to explain how much this film means to me. I know every line, every word of it. In a way, both good or bad, our whole present generation of Indian teens has been raised on this film. And it still holds up fairly phenomenally well. Every joke, every gag still hits like a knife, every emotional beat still reduces me to tears, one of the sharpest Bollywood screenplays ever written. Also extremely… more
