Curator Review

Verdict

A sentimental, dog-centered family drama that knows exactly how to push emotional buttons. It’s predictable and often cheesy, but for viewers who want a warm, tearful comfort watch with a strong canine appeal, it largely delivers.

Best for

  • dog lovers
  • viewers seeking a tearjerker
  • families with older kids
  • fans of sentimental dramas
  • comfort-watch audiences

Skip if

  • you dislike formulaic melodrama
  • you want subtle writing or naturalistic acting
  • you are tired of animal tearjerkers
  • you prefer high-stakes adventure over sentiment

Overview

A Dog’s Journey is engineered to make you cry, and it mostly succeeds by leaning hard into affection, loss, and reincarnation-style sentimentality. The premise is simple and the storytelling is unabashedly manipulative, but the movie understands the emotional power of a loyal dog as a witness to human lives changing over time.

Worth noting

The result is uneven: some performances and dialogue land awkwardly, and the plot can feel repetitive if you’ve seen this kind of family drama before. Still, the film’s sweetness is genuine enough that many viewers will forgive the clichés, especially if they’re already primed for a heart-tugging animal story.

Bottom line

This is less a polished prestige drama than a cozy, weepy crowd-pleaser. If you want a movie that aims straight for the heart and doesn’t care much about subtlety, it’s an easy recommendation; if you want restraint, realism, or surprise, it’s probably not for you.

There is no way any other movie from 2019 will be able to top this, I kid you not. I went in embarrassed to see a stupid dog movie, I came out a changed person This proves the theory that movies can be near religious experiences But in all honestly guys, this movie touched me in a few very specific ways that most movies haven't done Yeah I might change my opinion later down the line, but right now this… more
