Verdict
A lean, influential western that helped redefine the genre with its cynical antihero, tense standoffs, and unforgettable score. Its plot is simple, but the style, atmosphere, and swagger make it a landmark watch.

Overview
A Fistful of Dollars is one of those movies that feels bigger than its budget. Leone turns a familiar western setup into something harsher, stranger, and more self-aware, with a drifter who treats violence like a business transaction and a town that seems already morally dead. The film’s economy is part of its power: every glance, pause, and gun draw carries weight.
Worth noting
What really lingers is the style. The close-ups, the dusty faces, the exaggerated silence, and Morricone’s score all announce a new kind of western language. It is rough around the edges, and some of the dubbing and staging reflect that, but the film’s confidence more than compensates.
Bottom line
This is essential viewing for anyone curious about the spaghetti western boom or the evolution of the antihero. It may not be the most emotionally rich entry in the genre, but it is one of the most important, and still one of the coolest.

if this is the film that Sergio Leone was able to make with a limited budget, you can just imagine what he could have made with a few dollars more

Now that we finished our Terrence Malick screening series, Rahul Kohli is curating a 5-picture Sergio Leone screening series for our little film group. We kicked it off the Leone-fest last night with A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS.
In the coming weeks, we will be watching FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, THE GOOD THE BAD & THE UGLY, ONCE UPON IN THE WEST, and ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA.
It's such a pleasure to watch the western genre being revitalized and… more

A seminal stranger-in-town western that shares the mythic outsider energy, even if its moral temperature is more classical.
