Curator Review

Verdict

A brutally tense, morally collapsing crime drama with top-tier performances and a relentlessly bleak payoff. Sidney Lumet turns a simple heist setup into a devastating family tragedy, using fractured chronology and escalating panic to keep the pressure high.

Best for

  • Viewers who like bleak crime dramas and moral catastrophe
  • Fans of actor-driven ensemble pieces
  • People who enjoy non-linear storytelling and mounting dread
  • Audiences looking for a grim, adult thriller with emotional fallout

Skip if

  • You want a cleanly satisfying heist movie
  • You prefer lighter crime films or redemption arcs
  • You’re sensitive to relentless despair and family trauma
  • You dislike characters making terrible decisions under pressure

Overview

Sidney Lumet’s final film is a masterclass in pressure. What begins as a desperate robbery plan quickly becomes a study in cowardice, guilt, and the kind of family damage that can’t be repaired once it starts moving. The non-linear structure doesn’t just add suspense; it makes every bad choice feel inevitable and every consequence feel earned.

Worth noting

The cast is exceptional, especially Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose performance is both volcanic and painfully human. Ethan Hawke gives the film its raw nerve, while Albert Finney anchors the whole thing with a tragic, bruised authority. Lumet keeps the camera close to the emotional wreckage, letting the story spiral into something almost unbearable.

Bottom line

This is not a crime thriller that offers catharsis. It’s a bleak, adult nightmare about greed, shame, and the way family can become the site of your worst impulses. If you want a movie that tightens the screws until they snap, this is one of the best of its kind.

The forbidden chapter of the Before trilogy

Whenever people make lists with favourite or best directors, Sidney Lumet hardly ever pops up. That should change. Look at his filmography. He is one of the best directors that ever worked in the industry. This film is modern noir at its finest. It is bleak, rather disturbing and dark as hell. The story, which unravels in an asynchronous chronology, is multilayered and keeps you guessing due to its fragmented narrative. Only a very talented director can add the much… more

"It's too late to think." A simple heist premise that is fractured by familial melodrama and the sheer pathetic desperation and despair radiating off its characters. Credit to Lumet's skill with actors that he wrings about as much sympathy as one could out of this situation (god Hoffman) before arriving at what has to be the most aggressively bleak and contemptible destination of his career.
