Curator Review
Verdict
A slick, serviceable spy-action entry that works best as a character piece for Natasha’s found-family dynamic and Florence Pugh’s scene-stealing energy. It’s uneven in structure and arrives late in the character’s timeline, but the action is polished and the emotional core is stronger than many MCU entries.
Best for
Marvel fans who want a more grounded espionage flavor
Viewers interested in female-led action and fractured family dynamics
Fans of Florence Pugh’s dry, sharp comedic timing
Audiences who like glossy, mid-tier blockbuster craft with solid set pieces
Skip if
You want a self-contained origin story with real stakes
You’re tired of franchise continuity and retroactive fill-in stories
You prefer lean, tightly plotted spy thrillers over CGI-heavy action
You expect the film to substantially change Natasha’s legacy
Overview
Black Widow is one of the MCU’s more effective attempts to pivot from superhero spectacle into spy-movie texture. The Budapest-era backstory, the fake family setup, and the emphasis on trauma and obligation give it a slightly bruised tone that fits Natasha better than a lot of the franchise’s louder entries.
Worth noting
The movie’s biggest asset is Florence Pugh, who brings wit, bite, and a sense of lived-in contradiction to every scene she’s in. Scarlett Johansson plays Natasha with a steadier, more reflective energy than usual, and the supporting cast helps sell the dysfunctional family dynamic even when the script leans on familiar beats.
Bottom line
It’s still a Marvel movie, which means the action often arrives in polished but familiar bursts and the emotional material can feel undercut by franchise mechanics. But as a late-career capstone for a character defined by secrecy, damage, and loyalty, it lands better than its reputation suggests.

Red Guardian having “KARL” and “MARX” tattooed on his knuckles is the coolest thing a character has ever done in a marvel movie.
