Verdict
Borderline has a sharp premise, a committed lead performance, and enough nasty comic energy to keep horror-thriller fans engaged, but the tonal blend is uneven and the movie seems more interested in provocation than payoff. It’s the kind of watch that can feel wildly entertaining in stretches and frustrating in others.
Best for
Viewers who like darkly comic home-invasion thrillers
Fans of Samara Weaving’s blood-soaked, high-energy genre work
Audiences who enjoy unstable, unpredictable tone shifts
People looking for a mean, glossy, celebrity-satire-adjacent thriller
Skip if
You want a tightly controlled thriller with clean tonal consistency
You’re sensitive to stalking, captivity, or mental-illness-as-horror material
You prefer grounded character writing over heightened camp
You dislike movies that feel more like a vibe than a fully satisfying story
Overview
Borderline is built on a juicy, nasty setup: a pop star trapped in her own home by an obsessed intruder who mistakes delusion for romance. That premise gives the movie immediate tension, and the lead performance keeps it watchable even when the script starts swerving between horror, comedy, and satire without always landing the transitions.
Worth noting
The film’s biggest asset is its willingness to be outrageous. It wants to be funny, brutal, and unnerving at once, and for some viewers that chaos will be the appeal. There’s a glossy, pop-star spectacle to the whole thing that makes the violence feel extra abrasive, which is exactly the point.
Bottom line
Still, the movie never fully settles into a satisfying rhythm. The characters are more functional than deep, and the tonal juggling can make the experience feel messy rather than intentionally off-kilter. If you’re in the mood for a slick, deranged genre piece with strong star power, it’s worth a look; if you want precision, it may leave you cold.

samara weaving as a fictional 90s pop star.. yeah I’m never shutting up about this… sofia and skye riley were best friends in a alternate universe I’m calling it now.
hilarious, dark & surprisingly brutal. I do wish we had gotten some original music for the film but at least we got a cover of a celine dion classic from miss samara to make up for it. It’s like a fucked up romcom minus the romance.. samara & ray nicholson have incredible… more
