Verdict
A sturdy, well-acted wartime survival drama with real historical weight, but it leans on familiar heroics and occasionally softens the harsher edges of its subject. The action is effective enough, though the film is more admirable than transcendent.

fans of forest-partisan survival stories
audiences interested in Jewish resistance history
people who enjoy earnest, old-school studio war filmmaking
Skip if
you want a relentlessly devastating Holocaust film

Overview
Defiance has the kind of premise that can carry a film on its own: four brothers, a forest hideout, and a desperate mission to save lives under Nazi occupation. Edward Zwick stages it as a broad, accessible war drama, with strong performances from Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, and Jamie Bell giving the story enough grit and emotional force to land. The setting and historical stakes are compelling throughout.
Worth noting
What keeps it from becoming essential is a certain familiarity in the execution. The film often plays like a polished prestige adventure, with the resistance struggle shaped into a more conventional heroic arc than the material may deserve. Some of the emotional beats feel streamlined, and the action can slip into post-Bourne shakiness rather than clarity.
Bottom line
Still, it remains a worthwhile watch for viewers drawn to true stories of survival and resistance. Its most memorable quality is the tension between communal rescue and personal cost, which gives the film a humane center even when the filmmaking stays safely in the mainstream lane.

Just when I thought Daniel Craig couldn’t get any sexier, he starts to speak Russian.

It looks a bit like The Wind That Shakes the Barley transformed into an action movie, this Defiance, and yet it doesn't. Different time, different place. The Polish/Belarusian partisan struggle against the Nazis in the early 1940s, filmed in the Lithuanian forests. It is precisely these elements, the costumes, and indeed the attention to historical detail that are reminiscent of The Loach. "Defiance" is a gripping World War II drama that tells the incredible true story of the Bielski brothers, played brilliantly by Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, and a young George MacKay, who selflessly led a group of Jewish refugees to safety in the Belarusian forests. I was quite surprised at how much this feels like a Robin Hood movie. The not-so-merry bunch of outlaws & outcasts trying to live & work together against an evil oppressive enemy, who they fight via ambush & cunning, all from within the heart of a dark forest.
Anyway the action is a clear victim of the post-Bourne shaky cam, but this is otherwise solid.

With "Defiance," Edward Zwick assembles the type of film that has become his stock in trade: a rousing, emotionally alive story about war and its effects on those fighting it. Zwick weaves together humanity and explosive spectacle, and, though "Defiance" is not as passionate and exhilarating as "Legends of the Fall," "Glory," or "The Last Samurai," it is a memorable and impactful piece of work.
