Curator Review
Verdict
A sharp, warm, and very British character comedy-drama about class, education, and self-invention. It works best as a two-hander: Julie Walters is electric, and Michael Caine gives the film its melancholy edge.
Best for
viewers who like witty dialogue and character-driven British cinema
stories about class mobility, self-discovery, and education
fans of smart, humane comedy-dramas with strong performances
audiences who enjoy prickly mentor-student relationships
Skip if
you want a plot-heavy film with lots of external action
you dislike stage-play intimacy or talky scenes
you prefer a more overtly dramatic or emotionally explosive approach
Overview
Educating Rita is one of those films that feels small in scale but rich in feeling. Its pleasure comes from the friction between Rita’s hunger for life and Frank’s exhausted cynicism, with class, taste, and self-worth all colliding in the same room. The script is funny without being flimsy, and it keeps finding new shades in what could have been a simple uplift story.
Worth noting
Julie Walters is the film’s engine: brash, funny, vulnerable, and impossible to ignore. Michael Caine matches her beautifully, turning Frank into more than a mentor figure or a sad drunk; he’s a man whose own education has stalled in a different way. Their chemistry gives the film its bite and its tenderness.
Bottom line
What lingers is the film’s refusal to treat education as a magic fix. It understands that learning can liberate, but it can also unsettle, isolate, and expose the compromises people make to survive. That tension gives the film real staying power, and it’s why it remains such a satisfying watch.

Educating Rita is an incredible charming and funny little British film which explores class and self discovery through Rita a working class girl who wishes to break out her life and develops a friendship with her Tutor Frank who is a jaded alcoholic and from there her life changes for either better or worse. The film looks into the clash between social classes and the power a different education has on a individual but the film both critiques the snobbery… more Educating Rita is an incredible charming and funny little British film which explores class and self discovery through Rita a working class girl who wishes to break out her life and develops a friendship with her Tutor Frank who is a jaded alcoholic and from there her life changes for either better or worse. The hypo-electric, classical music that opens and is played in spurts throughout this film is strangely on point as it represents this turning point in romantic comedies while simultaneously placing a pin on a character’s identity. Educating Rita is absolutely wonderful, a consistently entertaining game of mental cat and mouse that expertly combines charm, wit and historical references. Michael Caine and Julie Walters are unaltered in their enthusiasm and believable chemistry, bringing forth the highest heights of likability and comforting interactions. Small, yet heartwarming. And Caine’s beard? Iconic.
