Curator Review
Verdict
A stirring martial-arts biopic with standout choreography, handsome period scale, and a redemption arc that lands harder in the longer cut. It’s strongest when it balances bruising combat with Huo Yuanjia’s humbling emotional journey and the film’s pride-versus-respect themes.
Best for
martial arts fans
Jet Li admirers
viewers who like historical action dramas
people who enjoy redemption stories
fans of elaborate fight choreography
Skip if
you want a tightly paced action movie with no melodrama
you dislike wire-fu or stylized combat
you prefer historically strict biopics
you need a consistently intense film without reflective stretches
Overview
Fearless is one of Jet Li’s most satisfying star vehicles because it gives him both the physical showcase and the spiritual arc. The fights are the main attraction, but they’re framed by a story about ego, loss, discipline, and the idea that real strength includes humility. That combination gives the film more emotional weight than a standard tournament picture.
Worth noting
The action is frequently excellent: crisp hand-to-hand exchanges, inventive weapon work, and a sense of escalation that builds toward the final confrontations. The film also benefits from its period setting and the way it turns national pride into a personal reckoning rather than just a slogan. When it slows down, it usually does so to let the character transformation breathe.
Bottom line
It can feel uneven in the theatrical version, and some viewers may prefer the fuller cut for its added context and smoother dramatic flow. Even so, the core experience is strong: a polished, earnest martial-arts epic with real pathos and enough spectacle to satisfy on pure action terms.

I am a simple man; I see Jet Li. I see Jet Li fighting. I see Jet Li kicking ass. I am a pleased man.
And this one delivers in all of it. Some great choreographies and fight sequences, with the finale being good, but honestly the big sequence with the swords in the water and all of that was arguably the highlight for me. The one where he kicks the ass of every contender was dope too. The story… more

Je Li has so much aura gaining in this film. Unfortunately, he died because he was poisoned, but since he fought for his country, he earned the respect of the Chinese people and other country too. Even his Japanese opponent knew how to win and lose with honor, showing true respect to Huo.

Jet Li version of "I Have No Enemies," but with a lot of kung fu.

If the appeal is disciplined combat and emotional stakes, this delivers intense action with a protective-hero core.
