The law has limits. He does not.
Overview
One morning in an ordinary town, five people are shot dead in a seemingly random attack. All evidence points to a single suspect: an ex-military sniper who is quickly brought into custody. The interrogation yields one written note: 'Get Jack Reacher!'. Reacher, an enigmatic ex-Army investigator, believes the authorities have the right man but agrees to help the sniper's defense attorney. However, the more Reacher delves into the case, the less clear-cut it appears. So begins an extraordinary chase for the truth, pitting Jack Reacher against an unexpected enemy, with a skill for violence and a secret to keep.

Verdict
A lean, old-school crime thriller with a hard-edged investigator, clean plotting, and bursts of blunt violence. It works best as a pulpy, no-nonsense mystery rather than a deep character study.
Best for
Viewers who like procedural mysteries with a lone-wolf lead
Fans of efficient, mid-budget action thrillers
People who enjoy dry humor and intimidating villains
Anyone looking for a straightforward Saturday-night watch
Skip if
You want a highly emotional or character-heavy drama
You prefer flashy, hyper-stylized action
You need a twisty thriller that constantly reinvents itself
You dislike Tom Cruise's intense, controlled screen persona
Overview
Jack Reacher is a sturdy, efficient thriller that knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be. It sets up a murder mystery, introduces a drifter with a code, and then keeps tightening the screws with clear stakes and crisp momentum. The pleasures here are procedural and tactile: interrogations, surveillance, car chases, and a few satisfyingly ugly bursts of violence.
Worth noting
Christopher McQuarrie directs with a confidence that favors clarity over clutter. The movie has a strong pulp backbone, and it benefits from a cast that understands the material’s straight-faced seriousness, especially in the supporting villainy and the late-arriving old-school character actors. It feels like a modern studio thriller with a distinctly retro spine.
Bottom line
It is not especially deep, and some viewers may find its emotional temperature a little cold. But if you want a clean, competent, adult thriller that moves with purpose and lets its lead be an almost mythic problem-solver, this is a very solid watch.

i liked this movie because it was 2 hours of tom cruise mind-fucking people. a typical scene:
Jack Reacher: "does shelly work here?"Random Vaguely Evil N00B: "she's not in today."Jack Reacher: "thanks, now i know she works here. you've been #REACHED!"
and then when he's not mind-fucking people, Werner Herzog shows up to talk about eating his own fingers or something. "what do mysterious super villains dream about?" i was hoping when he was inevitably shot he'd be… more

Remembered this being just “pretty good” but clearly I was an idiot ten years ago. This is so fucking great. If it came out now I would be throwing a parade in its honor. Maybe I should give it an extra half-star. Man what a blast.

In order to buy a construction company in Pittsburgh, you gotta dome a bunch of people with a sniper rifle to cover up overcharging the city a few thousand dollars for another bridge. Pittsburgh just loves bridges! However, you may incur the wrath of the military police's smollest, toughest bean: Jack Reacher.
Werner Herzog is in like 3 scenes, but the film would be significantly diminished without him.
