Still together, still lost.
Overview
Alex, Marty, and other zoo animals find a way to escape from Madagascar when the penguins reassemble a wrecked airplane. The precariously repaired craft stays airborne just long enough to make it to the African continent. There the New Yorkers encounter members of their own species for the first time. Africa proves to be a wild place, but Alex and company wonder if it is better than their Central Park home.

Verdict
A bright, fast-moving family sequel that leans harder into broad comedy and set-piece chaos than the first film. The penguins are the clear highlight, while the emotional beats are simple but effective for younger viewers and nostalgic adults.
Best for
kids and families looking for easygoing animated comedy
viewers who enjoy joke-dense ensemble movies
fans of the penguins’ deadpan action-comedy energy
people in the mood for colorful, low-stakes adventure
Skip if
you want a sharper or more emotionally layered animated sequel
the first film’s novelty was the main appeal for you
you dislike loud, broad comedy and constant gag pacing
you prefer animation with more visual ambition or narrative depth
Overview
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is a sequel that knows exactly what it is: bigger, louder, and more dependent on comic momentum than on story sophistication. The animal ensemble still works, especially when the film lets the penguins take over, and the African setting gives the movie a little more visual variety than the original’s island detour.
Worth noting
The humor is hit-or-miss, but the hits come often enough to keep it moving. It plays best as a family crowd-pleaser, with broad character comedy, a few surprisingly sweet beats, and a lot of self-aware silliness.
Bottom line
If you’re already on board with the franchise’s manic tone, this is an easy watch. If you’re looking for the most inventive DreamWorks animation or the strongest emotional arc, it’s more of a pleasant rerun than a standout.

Madagascar 2 Escape from mort is an important, seminal film. First off, the emotion wow. The themes of racism hit hard (where something like black kkklansmen did not). First off, the love triangle between gloria, moto moto and melman is striking and honest. When melman (swimmer) finds gloria making out with moto moto his heart is crushed. Oh and we can’t forget about the penguins, who are back and just as epic as ever. The boss baby voices the villian,… more Madagascar 2 Escape from mort is an important, seminal film.
