Verdict
A tense, paranoid 70s thriller with strong performances, a nasty edge, and one of cinema’s most infamous interrogation scenes. It’s not perfectly smooth, but the suspense, urban atmosphere, and escalating dread make it a standout of the era.
Best for
fans of 1970s paranoia thrillers
viewers who like crime stories with conspiracy and pursuit
people who enjoy intense, adult suspense
fans of New Hollywood filmmaking and gritty New York settings
Skip if
you want a light or fast-moving thriller
you’re sensitive to torture or dental/body-horror imagery
you prefer clean, tidy plotting over murky conspiracy
you dislike 70s pacing and procedural digressions
Overview
Marathon Man is one of those 1970s thrillers that feels both polished and feral. It starts as a story about an ordinary man getting pulled into something larger, then steadily tightens into a nightmare of surveillance, betrayal, and physical threat. John Schlesinger keeps the atmosphere anxious and unstable, and the film’s New York and European settings give it a cold, hunted feeling throughout.
Worth noting
The cast is a huge part of the appeal. Dustin Hoffman plays the central role with nervous energy, Roy Scheider brings bruised toughness, and Laurence Olivier gives the film its icy, unforgettable menace. The movie’s reputation rests partly on a handful of iconic scenes, but it works because the whole thing is built on dread, not just shocks.
Bottom line
It’s not a perfect thriller in the modern sense; some stretches are deliberately shaggy and the plotting can feel more slippery than elegant. But that looseness is also part of its 70s character. If you like conspiracy stories that get under your skin and don’t mind a film that becomes increasingly cruel, this is absolutely worth the watch.

Can you believe there was a time when this was a normal movie?! People were just like "hey I'm bored you wanna go see Marathon Man?" if this came out now we'd be throwing ticker tape parades celebrating the return of real movies

Does for dentistry what Jaws did for estuaries.
Oddly enough, Roy Scheider is involved in both.

There's a 16 page thread on IMDb about why Marathon Man is insulting because it suggests there is a jungle in Uruguay and there isn't.
As much as IMDb is second only to YouTube comments sections as being the biggest pit of iniquity on the internet, the right to nitpick motion pictures is something that we, as movie fans, can exercise whenever the mood takes us. We've all done it and we've all gotten angry at watching people nitpick our… more

A mainstream conspiracy thriller that channels the same feeling of an ordinary person trapped inside a larger machine.
