Verdict
A tense, humane drug-runner thriller anchored by a standout lead performance and a grounded look at economic desperation. It’s emotionally bruising rather than sensational, and its realism is the main draw.

People interested in immigrant, labor, or border-pressure narratives
Anyone who prefers tension built from character and circumstance over action
Skip if

You want a highly stylized thriller with big set pieces
Overview
Maria Full of Grace is a lean, unsentimental thriller about what poverty can make feel like a choice. Joshua Marston keeps the film close to Maria, so every decision lands with pressure: family obligation, bodily risk, and the quiet terror of being trapped between bad options. It’s a crime story, but it plays like a social emergency.
Worth noting
Catalina Sandino Moreno gives the film its pulse. Her performance is alert, guarded, and deeply vulnerable, which keeps the movie from becoming a message piece. The script is strongest when it treats Maria and the people around her as specific, flawed, and fully human rather than symbolic.
Bottom line
What lingers is the film’s moral clarity without easy answers. It understands the machinery of exploitation, but it never loses sight of the person inside it. The result is painful, intimate, and unusually respectful in the way it depicts desperation.

Desperation is a motherfucker.
When you lack the adequate wherewithal or support system needed to simply survive (much less provide for an equally desperate family), the idiom "desperate times calls for desperate measures" ceases being just an expression - the solution sold to those swallowed by desperation, however risky or extreme, becomes a panacea for the distressed, a fate-changing elixir for the hopeless.

Gran película, me dejó el corazón chiquito. Un duro retrato sobre las mulas de la droga en los Estados Unidos.
Es triste saber que esta es la realidad de muchas personas a nivel mundial.
No soy colombiano pero esto me pareció bastante íntimo.

Great movie, it left my heart broken. A harsh portrait of drug mules in the United States.
It is sad to know that this is the reality for many people around the world.
I'm not Colombian but I found this quite intimate.
