Curator Review
Verdict
A raunchy, star-driven comedy with a surprisingly sweet center. It works best as a vehicle for Jennifer Lawrence’s fearless comic performance and for viewers who want an old-school, broad studio sex comedy with some heart, but the premise is thin and the humor is uneven.
Best for
fans of crude but affectionate R-rated comedies
viewers who enjoy charismatic star turns carrying a movie
people looking for a light, messy summer watch
audiences open to awkward coming-of-age romance with a cynical edge
Skip if
you want sharp, tightly written comedy throughout
you dislike sex-comedy setups or cringe humor
you prefer romance with emotional realism and subtlety
you need a plot that feels grounded and consistently believable
Overview
No Hard Feelings is built around a simple, shamelessly high-concept setup, and it mostly succeeds by committing to the bit. The movie knows its engine is Jennifer Lawrence, and she throws herself into the role with enough confidence and physical comedy to keep the whole thing moving even when the script starts to wobble. It has the energy of a throwback studio comedy that wants to be outrageous without losing its soft center.
Worth noting
The film’s biggest strength is that it never fully turns mean. Beneath the awkward dates, humiliations, and sexual bravado, it’s really about two lonely people stumbling toward self-respect. That gives the movie a little more warmth than the premise suggests, even if the jokes are hit-or-miss and the story often feels like it’s rushing to the next set piece.
Bottom line
If you’re in the mood for a broad, R-rated crowd-pleaser with a strong lead performance, it’s easy to have a good time with it. If you want a smarter or more consistent comedy, the movie’s looseness and implausibility may wear thin fast.
