She's chasing a dream... they're chasing her.
Overview
What happens when a person decides that life is merely a state of mind? If you're Betty, a small-town waitress and soap opera fan from Fair Oaks, Kansas, you refuse to believe that you can't be with the love of your life just because he doesn't really exist. After all, life is no excuse for not living. Traumatized by a savage event, Betty enters into a fugue state that allows -- even encourages -- her to keep functioning... in a kind of alternate reality.

Verdict
A darkly funny, off-kilter crime comedy with a strong central performance and a nasty streak. It’s uneven and sometimes mean-spirited, but the blend of soap-opera fantasy, trauma, and absurd violence makes it memorable and worth seeing for viewers who like their comedies strange.
Best for
fans of dark crime comedies
viewers who like surreal or delusional protagonists
people interested in early-2000s offbeat ensemble films
fans of Renée Zellweger or Morgan Freeman
audiences who enjoy Coen-adjacent tonal whiplash
Skip if
you want a cleanly balanced tone
you dislike graphic violence in comedies
you prefer straightforward thrillers or romance
you’re sensitive to misanthropic or abrasive humor
you want a polished, emotionally tidy screenplay
Overview
Nurse Betty is one of those movies that keeps shifting under your feet. It starts with soap-opera fantasy and small-town frustration, then swerves into crime, trauma, and grotesque comedy without ever fully settling into one lane. That instability is part of the appeal: the film is funny because it’s so wrong-footed, and unsettling because it keeps finding new ways to be cruel.
Worth noting
Renée Zellweger gives the movie its heart, playing Betty as both fragile and strangely unstoppable. Around her, the film builds a world of deluded men, opportunists, and killers who are all, in their own way, escaping reality. Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock are especially effective as a mismatched criminal duo, giving the movie a weirdly elastic energy whenever they’re on screen.
Bottom line
It’s not a perfectly judged film, and Neil LaBute’s sharp edges can feel more abrasive than insightful. But if you like darkly comic crime stories with a surreal emotional logic, this is an easy recommendation. It’s the kind of early-2000s oddity that feels bigger and stranger than its reputation suggests.

That feeling when you think you've put on a normal romcom and 20 minutes in someones head is scalped :D

Starring: My Name is Morgan Freeman
This has been another of those movies that have been on my radar for a very, very long time. I remember seeing the posters in theaters and the rent store. I remember seeing clips playing on TV. Yet this was around the time Me, Myself and I was also popular, so while I kinda understood they were not the same movie, part of me found them interchangeable. Also, I had this suspicion that this… more

As fantasias maravilhosas do final do século passado.

This plays to me now sort of like the movie the Coens' detractors frequently accuse them of making: frequently sort of smugly superior and misanthropic and mean. And Labute's typically disorganized here, with a lot of small soft targets that he often attacks with simple clueless provocations or broad caricature. That said it's often quite funny and there's pretty interesting thread here about how the characters are so susceptible to fantasy because they're united by naivete and simple emotional vulnerability. I liked it?

For its fractured sense of reality and the way subjective experience reshapes the story.
