Curator Review

Verdict

A lean, low-budget found-footage horror film that turns domestic space into a pressure cooker. It’s more about dread, sound, and escalation than spectacle, and its simplicity is a big part of why it still works.

Best for

  • viewers who like slow-burn dread and minimalism
  • fans of found-footage and home-invasion-adjacent horror
  • people who enjoy relationship tension inside horror stories
  • late-night solo viewing

Skip if

  • you want constant monster reveals or heavy gore
  • you dislike shaky-cam / surveillance-style filmmaking
  • you prefer fast-paced, plot-heavy horror
  • you need likable or competent characters to stay engaged

Overview

Paranormal Activity is a textbook example of how restraint can be scarier than excess. It takes a very ordinary suburban setup and slowly poisons it with uncertainty, using long stretches of stillness, tiny disturbances, and the threat of something just out of frame to build real tension.

Worth noting

What gives the movie its staying power is not only the haunted-house mechanics, but the relationship at its center. The film keeps returning to the couple’s escalating mistrust and the boyfriend’s need to control the situation, which makes the haunting feel both supernatural and deeply personal.

Bottom line

It’s also a major craft piece for sound and timing. The scares are often simple, but they land because the movie understands patience, silence, and anticipation. If you’re in the mood for a stripped-down horror film that thrives on atmosphere, this is an easy recommendation.

micah being warned not to taunt the demon and doing it anyway like he's one of buzzfeed unsolved boys... you are not the buzzfeed unsolved boys tho, micah.
