Verdict
A maximalist crowd-pleaser that turns revolutionary melodrama into pure spectacle: huge action, emotional bromance, musical set pieces, and unabashed anti-colonial swagger. It’s long, loud, and often absurd, but the filmmaking is so confident and inventive that the excess becomes the point.
Best for
Viewers who want big-screen spectacle and cathartic action
Fans of heightened melodrama and larger-than-life heroes
Audiences open to musical numbers inside an action epic
People who like buddy stories with strong emotional payoff
Anyone looking for a wildly entertaining theatrical experience
Skip if
You prefer realism, restraint, or grounded historical drama
You dislike long runtimes and big tonal swings
You want subtle character work over operatic emotion
You’re turned off by stylized action, dance, or overt sentimentality
Overview
RRR is the kind of movie that reminds you spectacle can still feel alive. It takes a fictionalized revolutionary framework and detonates it into something ecstatic: impossible stunts, thunderous music, broad comedy, and sincere emotion all colliding without apology. The result is not just impressive craft, but a genuine rush.
Worth noting
What makes it work is how fully it commits to friendship as its emotional engine. The film’s central bond gives the action a pulse, and the anti-colonial fury gives the fantasy a purpose. It’s knowingly excessive, but the excess is disciplined enough to keep landing as exhilaration rather than noise.
Bottom line
If you want realism, this is not your movie. If you want a three-hour adrenaline surge that feels like a celebration of cinema itself, it’s hard to do better. It’s one of those rare blockbusters that earns the word “event.”

this got me thinking about how deteriorated the notion of spectacle is in the american cinema now. our spectacle is entirely metatextual, just watching different IP appear on screen together is supposed to be thrilling. RRR gets what actual spectacle should look like. absolutely electrifying from beginning to end. i’ll leave it at that bc i’m less familiar with indian cinema than i should be but i had an absolute blast watching this, laughing and cheering more than i’ve done in a theater in years. if you have the opportunity to see this in a theater do NOT pass it up
