Curator Review
Verdict
A standout superhero sequel that deepens Peter Parker’s conflict without losing the charm, humor, or kinetic spectacle. It balances intimate melodrama with big set pieces, and the train sequence, Doc Ock, and emotional stakes still land hard.
Best for
superhero fans
character-driven action
early-2000s blockbusters
comic-book drama
viewers who like earnest emotional stakes
Skip if
you want a light, joke-first superhero movie
you dislike melodrama or romantic angst
you prefer modern MCU pacing and quips over earnestness
Overview
Spider-Man 2 is the rare sequel that feels both bigger and more personal than the original. Sam Raimi turns Peter Parker’s burnout into the engine of the movie, making heroism feel like a burden rather than a fantasy. That gives the action real emotional weight, especially when the film pauses to let Peter fail, recover, and choose responsibility again.
Worth noting
What makes it endure is how confidently it mixes tones: comic-book spectacle, romantic longing, awkward comedy, and genuine tragedy. Doc Ock is a great villain because the movie lets him be both threatening and pitiable, while the supporting cast keeps the whole thing grounded in messy human relationships. The train sequence remains one of the great superhero set pieces because it’s not just visually exciting; it’s a public test of Peter’s body, will, and identity.
Bottom line
It also has a very specific early-2000s sincerity that modern superhero films often smooth away. The movie is emotional without being embarrassed by emotion, and that directness is a big part of its appeal. If you want a superhero film that understands the genre as both myth and soap opera, this is one of the best examples ever made.

the virgin amazing spider-man:- responsibility, no power- listens to phillip phillips unironically- shares diluted to 0.03%- skater- has never seen a girl
the chad mcu spider-man:- power, no responsibility - girls are fine but legos are better- can’t do anything w/o sugar daddy iron man- snap score hit 1m last week - favorite movie is the lion king (2019), doesn’t know it’s a remake
the thad raimi/maguire spider-man:- power & responsibility - ironic dancing - respectful to women but not a simp- relatable (can’t pay rent, occasionally emo)- reads poetry, Augustine, probably

Kirsten Dunst when asked her thoughts on the new Spider-Man movies she responded with "I don't care. Everyone likes our Spider-Man. C’mon, am I right or what? We made the best ones, so who cares?"
That's it that's my review they're the best and puts every other superhero movie to shame without a doubt.
Also Doctor Octopus going on a murderous rampage instead of just admitting he was wrong is The Mood

The essential setup for Peter Parker’s world, tone, and moral code; pairs naturally with the sequel’s deeper emotional arc.

A messier but thematically adjacent continuation of Peter’s guilt, ego, and romantic turmoil.
