Never let her out of your sight. Never let your guard down. Never fall in love.
Overview
A former Secret Service agent grudgingly takes an assignment to protect a pop idol who's threatened by a crazed fan. At first, the safety-obsessed bodyguard and the self-indulgent diva totally clash. But before long, all that tension sparks fireworks of another sort, and the love-averse tough guy is torn between duty and romance.

Curator Review
Verdict
A glossy, melodramatic star vehicle that works best as a romance-thriller with a huge pop-music payoff. The plot is thin and the ending is famously divisive, but Whitney Houston’s presence and the central chemistry make it an easy recommendation for viewers who want big emotions, iconic songs, and 90s studio-movie sheen.
Best for
fans of romantic thrillers
viewers who like star-driven 90s studio movies
people seeking a comfort-watch with melodrama
audiences who want a famous soundtrack and performance showcase
Skip if
you need airtight plotting
you dislike earnest romance
you want a hard-edged action movie
you’re allergic to cheesy 90s sentimentality
Overview
The Bodyguard is less interested in being a polished thriller than in becoming a full-on pop-culture event. The premise is simple, almost pulp-like, but the movie leans into the friction between restraint and spectacle: a guarded professional, a larger-than-life performer, and the emotional chaos that follows when duty starts to look like desire.
Worth noting
What makes it endure is Whitney Houston. The film is built around her charisma, voice, and screen presence, and it knows exactly when to step back and let her own the frame. Kevin Costner gives the movie a steady, weathered seriousness that helps sell the romance, even when the script gets clunky or the tonal shifts feel abrupt.
Bottom line
It’s cheesy, overblown, and occasionally frustrating, but that’s part of the appeal. The Bodyguard plays like a glossy 90s melodrama with thriller trappings, and for the right viewer that combination is pure comfort cinema. The ending may provoke groans, but the ride there is memorable enough to justify the trip.
