Curator Review
Verdict
A moody, offbeat Vegas romance with noir edges, strong performances, and a melancholy streak that gives the premise more emotional weight than its logline suggests. It’s especially appealing if you like character-driven crime stories that mix cynicism, tenderness, and a little surreal fatalism.
Best for
fans of small-scale neo-noir
viewers who like sad-sack protagonists and wounded romances
people drawn to old-school Las Vegas atmosphere
audiences who enjoy darkly comic crime dramas
Skip if
you want a fast, twist-heavy thriller
you dislike Vegas-set stories
you prefer straightforward romance over melancholy genre blends
you need a tightly plotted, consistently realistic drama
Overview
The Cooler turns a high-concept Vegas gimmick into something unexpectedly tender and bruised. William H. Macy makes Bernie feel like a man cursed by the universe, while Maria Bello brings warmth and possibility into a world built on bad luck, debt, and performance. The result is less a slick casino caper than a sad, smoky fable about whether love can interrupt a life of defeat.
Worth noting
Wayne Kramer leans into the city’s neon mythology without losing sight of the human mess underneath it. Alec Baldwin gives the casino world a blunt, predatory force, and the film’s mix of romance, violence, and deadpan humor keeps it from settling into one lane. It can feel uneven, but that looseness also gives it a strange, scrappy charm.
Bottom line
If you’re in the mood for a character piece with noir atmosphere and a bittersweet streak, this is an easy recommendation. It’s not the most polished Vegas movie, but it has enough style, feeling, and oddball conviction to linger after the credits.

Cool movie. Never got around to this one but I remember it being nominated for a bunch of stuff back when it came out.

This is a unique film as it does not want to fit in anywhere. It is a tragic love story, a violent thriller, a fairytale and a very human exploration of life and love.
It all centres around one of the most intriguing characters I have ever seen, portrayed by the absolutely brilliant William H. Macy. His depiction of the unlucky Bernie and his gradual transformation is simply stunning. It has one of Alec Baldwin's best roles ever as well. An absolute joy to watch!

Just wasn't really for me 🤷
My wife recommended I watch this, and she usually doesn't miss.
But this movie was just kind of boring.
The acting was pretty solid for the most part. But I just couldn't get behind the story being told.
It was kind of all over the place.
I tend to not like a lot of movies that take place in Vegas. I guess it's kind of 50/50.
They usually stick to the same plot, same… more

The Cooler will take away people's luck,
And in Vegas, Macy is stuck.
He'll play it mellow,
With Lady Bello,
Maybe there is love and luck for this shmuck.

Words cannot describe how much I loathe degenerate gamblers. However, William H. Macy has cornered the market at playing sad sacks — so, I'll allow following one here.
Also, there's a scene in which Macy and Maria Bello feign having sex — that is hilariously worth the price of admission.

A bleak, escalating tale of ordinary people undone by money, luck, and bad decisions.
