Verdict
A forceful, emotionally direct wrongful-conviction drama anchored by Denzel Washington’s standout performance. It can feel a bit conventional and overlong, but the film’s moral urgency, courtroom tension, and human stakes make it worthwhile.

Overview
The Hurricane is less a boxing movie than a bruising legal and moral drama about racism, injustice, and the long cost of being made into a symbol. Norman Jewison frames Rubin Carter’s story with broad, accessible storytelling, but the film’s real power comes from its outrage and compassion rather than its formal daring.
Worth noting
Denzel Washington gives one of his most commanding performances, carrying the film through its slower stretches and occasional sentimental turns. The movie can be conventional and a little too eager to underline its points, yet it remains compelling because the underlying story is so painful and the emotional payoff is hard-earned.
Bottom line
If you come for sports-movie adrenaline, you may be disappointed. If you come for a serious, old-school prestige drama about a man fighting to reclaim his life, it delivers with conviction and memorable intensity.

No movie will ever tell this story more effectively than Bob Dylan did.

This typical 90s styled biopic ain’t much of a sports movie, rather an emotionally strong humane social drama that stays relevant till date for its subject matter. The execution however takes the cliched conventional route, runs a bit too long and lacks any high thrills, yet the entire show is carried and enriched by the powerfully absorbing performance of Denzel freaking Washington. The dialogues and the finale were moving and impactful. A solid watch.

OK, was I the only one who thought this movie was going to be a sports film where we would see Washington boxing throughout the whole movie? By the opening, I was led to believe this would be a new take on sports a la "Raging Bull", but I was pleasantly surprised to find a very good legal drama instead.
I think Norman Jewison was the right choice as director in a lot of ways. His experience in law and… more

I can't believe this movie isn't being talked about anymore. Easily one of Denzel Washington's most heart-wrenching performances, just wow. Denzel losing the Best Actor Oscar for this is genuinely a crime against humanity

Denzel Washington’s towering performance in “Malcolm X” was certainly a performance for the ages, but out of bad luck (and politics) he didn’t win the Oscar. Washington starred in a slew of high caliber dramas throughout the ’90’s that also sung of his movie star charisma (“Philadelphia,” “Crimson Tide,” “Courage Under Fire”), but another Oscar nom didn’t come his way until this 1999 docudrama about the boxer Rubin Carter who was framed for murder by a racist police outfit and… more Denzel Washington’s towering performance in “Malcolm X” was certainly a performance for the ages, but out of bad luck (and politics) he didn’t win the Oscar.
