Curator Review
Verdict
A vivid, old-school fantasy adventure with unforgettable creature design, a melancholy streak, and a surprisingly emotional core. It’s uneven in places, but its practical effects, imagination, and sincerity still make it a standout family fantasy.

Anyone looking for a heartfelt adventure with real emotional stakes
Skip if
You want polished modern pacing and seamless CGI

Overview
The NeverEnding Story is one of those fantasy films that feels genuinely dreamed rather than manufactured. Its world has texture, danger, and wonder in equal measure, and the practical effects give Fantasia a tactile strangeness that modern digital fantasy often misses. Even when the storytelling gets a little clunky, the movie’s sincerity carries it through.
Worth noting
What lingers most is the film’s emotional tone: this is not just a quest story, but a story about grief, imagination, and the power of retreating into stories when the real world feels hostile. The film can be frightening, especially for younger viewers, but that edge is part of why it lasts.
Bottom line
It’s not perfect, and some viewers will find the pacing or editing rough by today’s standards. But as a piece of 80s fantasy craft, it remains distinctive, ambitious, and oddly moving. For viewers open to its blend of wonder and sadness, it’s still very much worth the trip.

Halfway through this bullshit, the title seemed less like a fairy tale and more like a threat.

Time and time again I rewatch this film so my childhood will never end. Brimming with magic. A soundtrack to die for. Do your kids a favor and replace their Blu-ray disc of Frozen with a copy of this superior adventure.
Be sure to give them fair warning though about the creepy-ass wolf, the scary-sexy sphinxes, the multi-faced whatchamacallits and the disturbing death of a beautiful horse.
Yeah, that's right bitch, the 80's wasn't for pussies and hug-needy snowmen. It was for luckdragon-riding dreamers who settle for nothing less than fantasy perfection!

No fantasy film dares to be this bold anymore. Cowards.

Another 80s fantasy built on practical effects, surreal worldbuilding, and a child’s emotional journey through danger.
