Curator Review

Verdict

A richly acted, emotionally bruising mystery-thriller that blends procedural detail, romance, and moral regret into a memorable crime drama. Its reputation is well earned: the investigation is gripping, but the film’s real power comes from how it treats memory, obsession, and the cost of unfinished justice.

Best for

  • Viewers who like character-driven mysteries
  • Fans of romantic dramas with a noir edge
  • People who appreciate long-form emotional payoff
  • Audiences drawn to courtroom and investigation stories
  • Fans of elegant, old-school filmmaking with modern intensity

Skip if

  • You want a fast, twist-only thriller
  • You prefer minimal melodrama
  • You dislike stories that linger on regret and lost time
  • You need a strictly procedural crime film

Overview

This is one of those rare crime films that feels both intimate and epic. The investigation into a brutal murder is compelling on its own, but the film keeps widening its emotional frame, turning a cold case into a study of memory, guilt, and the ways people fail to say what matters until it is too late.

Worth noting

What makes it stand out is the balance between craft and feeling. The performances are warm and lived-in, the writing is patient, and the film knows when to let a glance or a silence carry more weight than exposition. It moves between dry humor, bureaucratic frustration, and sudden violence with real confidence.

Bottom line

Its most famous set piece is deservedly admired, but the film is stronger than a single bravura moment. It has the sweep of a classic melodrama and the structure of a mystery, with an ending that lands like a moral reckoning. If you like your thrillers to leave a bruise, this is essential viewing.
