Curator Review
Verdict
An uplifting, visually expansive adventure-comedy-drama with a strong emotional payoff. It blends daydream-fueled wish fulfillment with real-world self-discovery, and its cinematography, music, and travel imagery do a lot of the heavy lifting.
Best for
viewers who like inspirational feel-good movies
fans of travel and adventure stories
people who enjoy gentle comedy with emotional sincerity
audiences drawn to striking cinematography and scenic locations
watchers looking for a midlife-reset or self-discovery arc
Skip if
you dislike earnest, sentimental storytelling
you want a tightly realistic film with no fantasy flourishes
you’re put off by some broad comedy and occasional awkwardness
you prefer high-stakes adventure over reflective personal growth
Overview
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a crowd-pleasing escape movie with a surprisingly tender center. It turns procrastination, fantasy, and quiet dissatisfaction into a story about finally stepping into your own life, and it does so with real visual flair. The travel imagery is the main attraction, but the film works because it understands how small acts of courage can feel enormous.
Worth noting
Ben Stiller leans into a restrained, sympathetic performance that keeps the movie from floating away on pure inspiration. The humor is soft and a little awkward, but that fits the character. When the film shifts from daydreams to real movement, it lands with genuine emotional lift.
Bottom line
It is not subtle, and some viewers will find the tone overly polished or sentimental. But if you want a movie that feels like a brisk reset button, this is an easy recommendation. It’s one of those films that makes the world seem a little bigger when the credits roll.

Look Ben Stiller in his electric blue eyes and tell him that this film doesn't have:
- some damn nice cinematography- some damn nice music - a damn nice story with a god damn nice ending- a damn great and not cringe way to use a dating website in a film thanks to Todd - great end credit songs (which I always take note of) - a damn great cast - ICELAND IS SO BEAUTOFUL FUCK ENGLAND- I'VE GONE OFF TOPIC BUT THE SKATEBOARD SCENE - SNOW LEOPARDS

"Beautiful things don't ask for attention."
Life this past week has been pretty tough. Watching my favorite movie helped a lot. This will always profoundly affect me in a personal and intimate way. The music. The perfect characterization and performances. The storytelling through imagery. The awkward humor. It's the kind of cheesy, dorky, wonderful movie I would dream to make. I'm also traveling Europe for 10 weeks in the spring, so it feels like this was written for me right now

A thoughtful, gently comic film about breaking out of routine and choosing a fuller life.
