Curator Review

Verdict

A brutal, angering true-story drama about patriarchal violence and institutional cruelty. It’s emotionally punishing and sometimes blunt, but it is effective as a witness to injustice and as a vehicle for Shohreh Aghdashloo’s forceful performance.

Best for

  • viewers seeking hard-hitting social-issue dramas
  • audiences interested in women’s rights stories
  • people who can handle intense, upsetting true-crime-adjacent material
  • fans of courtroom-free but advocacy-driven historical dramas

Skip if

  • you want a subtle or nuanced character study
  • you’re sensitive to graphic cruelty and execution scenes
  • you dislike overtly didactic filmmaking
  • you prefer films with a hopeful or cathartic ending

Overview

The Stoning of Soraya M. is designed to wound. It takes a real account of misogyny, false accusation, and communal cowardice, then presents it with the urgency of testimony rather than the polish of a prestige drama. The result is often harrowing, sometimes heavy-handed, but undeniably effective at making the viewer feel the scale of the injustice.

Worth noting

What gives the film its force is the contrast between the quiet village setting and the barbarity of what unfolds there. The framing device, with Zahra recounting Soraya’s fate, adds a layer of witness and memory that keeps the story from feeling merely sensational. Still, the film’s bluntness can feel manipulative at times, especially when it pushes so hard for outrage.

Bottom line

Even so, the emotional impact is hard to dismiss. This is the kind of film that many viewers will admire more than enjoy, and that distinction matters. If you can tolerate its severity, it’s a searing condemnation of gendered violence and the systems that enable it.

The Stoning of Soraya M. I really should write this tomorrow.I really should count to 10 first.I have never ever been so angry after watching a film. Ever.So maybe I owe it to the makers of this film to give them an honest appraisal from one member of their audience. This is the most abominable way to tell a tragic story. I have never encountered any film that does such an injustice to its topic. Ever. If… more
