You see them on the street. You watch them on TV. You might even vote for one this fall. You think they're people just like you. You're wrong. Dead wrong.
Overview

Curator Review
Verdict
A sharp, funny, and surprisingly patient sci-fi action satire with a blunt anti-capitalist streak and one of the most memorable reveal gimmicks in genre cinema. Its pulpy fight scenes and deadpan attitude make it both entertaining and politically pointed.
Best for
fans of 1980s genre cinema
viewers who like social satire in sci-fi
people who enjoy lean, high-concept thrillers
fans of practical-effects creature reveals
audiences who like cult movies with a rebellious edge
Skip if
you want fast-paced nonstop action
you dislike overt political allegory
you prefer polished modern effects
you need a tightly realistic premise
Overview
John Carpenter turns a ridiculous premise into a cold, funny, and oddly disciplined genre machine. The film moves with the confidence of a B-movie that knows exactly how seriously to take itself, and that balance is a big part of its appeal.
Worth noting
What lingers most is the way it turns consumer culture into horror without losing its pulp energy. The famous sunglasses reveal is iconic for a reason, but the movie works because it commits to the idea all the way through, letting paranoia, class anger, and street-level grit drive the story.
Bottom line
It is also a very physical movie, built around blunt confrontations, dusty locations, and a hero who solves problems with stubbornness as much as insight. If you like your sci-fi with teeth, attitude, and a clear political bite, this is essential cult viewing.
