Curator Review
Verdict
A solid but conventional true-crime drama elevated by Cate Blanchett’s committed performance and the grim urgency of the real story. It’s worth a look if you want an accessible newsroom-versus-crime narrative, but the filmmaking is often blunt and formulaic.

Overview
Veronica Guerin is the kind of true-story crime drama that lives or dies on urgency, and this one gets enough of it right to stay watchable. The real-life stakes are inherently compelling: a reporter pushing into the drug trade, getting closer to the people who want her silenced, and refusing to back down. Cate Blanchett gives the film its center of gravity, bringing steel, intelligence, and a believable stubbornness to the role.
Worth noting
The problem is that the movie often feels like it is telling you what to feel instead of letting the danger build naturally. Joel Schumacher keeps the pacing efficient, but the script leans on familiar biopic beats and blunt signposting. The result is competent rather than electric, with a few strong scenes surrounded by a fairly standard dramatic shape.
Bottom line
Still, if you’re drawn to journalistic crusader stories or crime films rooted in real events, there is enough tension and atmosphere here to make it worthwhile. It’s not the definitive version of this material, but Blanchett’s performance and the grim subject matter give it a pulse that carries it past its rougher edges.

Cate Blanchett goes chameleon again in this fairly standard but solid biopic with a good cast and Schumacher calling the shots behind the camera.
Without Blanchett's performance, the film wouldn't be that good because of the rough script, but thankfully Cate is excellent again with a brilliant Irish accent and pretty much becomes Veronica.
Extra points for Cate and Colin raving about Cantona and the two appearances in a United shirt.

It is alarming how well that mom haircut suits Cate Blanchett. She truly can do anything.

”How can things get any worse?”“Things can always get worse, Veronica”
In this true story of Veronica Guerin’s life, Cate Blanchett portrays this investigative reporter with the Princess Di haircut who manages to get under the skin of Ireland’s drug criminals, and then refuses to buckle under their threats and intimidation.
Of course, Blanchett is fantastic and once again carries what is an otherwise bland movie. And I know it’s a… more
