Curator Review
Verdict: A gorgeously made, emotionally forceful conclusion that leans hard into romance, grief, and closure. It is likely to satisfy viewers who want catharsis and visual splendor, though some fans may feel it softens the series’ earlier themes to deliver a more conventional ending.
Best for: fans of emotionally devastating melodrama; viewers who value lush animation and visual craft; romance-forward anime audiences; people who want cathartic closure after a long series
Skip if: you wanted the story to remain focused on independence and self-discovery; you dislike melodramatic reunions or sentimental endings; you are sensitive to age-gap romance implications; you prefer tight standalone films over epilogue-style conclusions
Overview: This is the kind of sequel that exists to make fans feel everything at once. The film is lavishly animated, meticulously composed, and deeply committed to emotional payoff, with the production values carrying as much weight as the story itself. When it works, it lands with real force: a sweeping, tear-soaked finale built around memory, love, and the pain of moving forward.
Worth noting: At the same time, it is not a neutral continuation of the series’ ideas. Some viewers will see it as a moving completion of Violet’s journey; others will feel it narrows the earlier, more open-ended themes into a more conventional romantic resolution. That tension is part of the film’s identity, and it explains the split reactions.
Bottom line: If you come for catharsis, spectacle, and a final emotional release, it delivers. If you wanted the series to end on a more ambiguous note about healing and selfhood, this may feel like a step backward. Either way, it is a polished, sincere, and often overwhelming piece of melodrama.

- garbear: I found this to be a very disappointing end to Violet's character arc. She spent the series helping other people to cope with loss and find closure, and by the end it felt like she was ready to move on and live her life too. That was such a great place to end things, but it just feels like the movie backtracked all of that growth so we could get a schmaltzy reunion at the end.
- parker🪲: he should've died at war
- Ethan Ethan: Was actually disappointed when I heard what this movie is gonna be about, I think the way things left off in the series is already perfct. But now that I've seen it, I was wrong. Who am I to deny Violet of happiness? Bless you Kyoani, keep doing what you're doing.
