Can two friends sleep together and still love each other in the morning?
Overview
Sex always gets in the way of friendships between men and women. At least, that's what Harry Burns believes. So when Harry meets Sally Albright and a deep friendship blossoms between them, Harry's determined not to let his attraction to Sally destroy it. But when a night of weakness ends in a morning of panic, can the pair avoid succumbing to Harry's fears by remaining friends and admitting they just might be the perfect match for each other?

Curator Review
Verdict
A sharp, endlessly rewatchable romantic comedy with unusually observant writing about friendship, attraction, and the awkward rituals of modern dating. It’s funny, warm, and emotionally precise, with two charismatic leads and one of the genre’s most famous endings.
Best for
fans of dialogue-driven romantic comedies
viewers who like New York as a character
people who enjoy slow-burn chemistry and emotional honesty
audiences looking for a smart, rewatchable 80s rom-com
Skip if
you want high-concept plotting over conversation
you dislike talky, character-based comedies
you prefer romance that is more melodramatic than witty
you’re not in the mood for a very specific late-80s urban sensibility
Overview
This is one of the defining romantic comedies because it understands that attraction is often tangled up with timing, ego, and self-protection. The movie’s pleasure comes from watching two people who are clearly right for each other spend years insisting they are not, while the script keeps finding fresh comic angles on loneliness and desire.
Worth noting
What still feels special is how lived-in it is. The banter is fast but never airless, and the film gives equal weight to friendship, sexual tension, and the little habits that make a relationship feel real. New York is rendered as a place for talk, wandering, and emotional drift, which suits the movie’s patient build.
Bottom line
It’s also a star vehicle in the best sense: both leads are funny, vulnerable, and sharply defined, and the supporting players add texture without stealing the center. The result is a romantic comedy that is both comforting and unusually intelligent, with enough wit and feeling to justify its reputation.

A witty ensemble romance with melancholy undercurrents and a strong sense of how love arrives through friendship and timing.
