They're catching killers. He's about to become one.
Overview
In 1991 Miami, Dexter Morgan transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can't be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements' radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Verdict
A competent, watchable prequel that mostly succeeds by recreating the early-Dexter vibe: sunny Miami, forensic procedure, and a morally compromised antihero learning the rules of his own darkness. It’s strongest as a nostalgia piece and as a character study of Harry and young Dexter, but it can feel overly familiar, since the premise is built to echo a story the franchise already told better in its first seasons.
Best for
Dexter fans who want more of the franchise
Viewers who like serial-killer procedurals with a glossy TV-drama sheen
People interested in origin stories and character backstory
Fans of 1990s-set crime shows and Miami noir
Skip if
You want the sharpest or most essential Dexter experience
You’re tired of franchise prequels and recycled origin beats
You prefer shows that reinvent their premise instead of extending it
You want a complete series with a finished ending
Overview
Dexter: Original Sin is a solid, often entertaining prequel that understands the appeal of the franchise: the contrast between bright Miami surfaces and dark compulsions, plus the procedural cat-and-mouse mechanics around a killer hiding in plain sight. Patrick Gibson does a credible job capturing Dexter’s blankness before it hardens into the familiar persona, and Christian Slater gives the show a useful emotional anchor as Harry.
Worth noting
The problem is that the series is operating in a shadow it can’t fully escape. Because we already know where Dexter ends up, the tension comes less from surprise than from seeing how the Code is assembled and how the character is shaped. That can be interesting, but it also makes some story beats feel predetermined, and the show occasionally leans too hard on franchise familiarity instead of finding a fresh angle.
Bottom line
As a one-season prequel, it’s easy to sample and easy to enjoy in the moment, but it doesn’t really replace the original run or stand as a major reinvention. If you want more Dexter atmosphere and a decent return to the world, it delivers. If you want the franchise at its most vital, the early seasons of Dexter remain the benchmark.

The essential companion and still the franchise high point, especially the early seasons where the premise feels freshest and most psychologically sharp.
