Overview

A loose remake of “12 Angry Men”, “12” is set in contemporary Moscow where 12 very different men must unanimously decide the fate of a young Chechen accused of murdering his step-father, a Russian army officer. Consigned to a makeshift jury room in a school gymnasium, one by one each man takes center stage to confront, connect, and confess while the accused awaits a verdict and revisits his heartbreaking journey through war in flashbacks.

Curator Review

Verdict

An ambitious, highly theatrical remake that expands 12 Angry Men into a sprawling Russian courtroom chamber piece with war trauma, nationalism, and moral argument. It’s often compelling and well-acted, but the added backstories and length can feel overblown and heavy-handed, especially if you want the lean, pressure-cooker precision of the original.

Best for

  • Viewers curious about international remakes that radically reinterpret a classic
  • Fans of courtroom dramas and ensemble acting showcases
  • People interested in Russian social and political subtext
  • Viewers who don’t mind long, monologue-driven films

Skip if

  • You want a tight, economical thriller
  • You dislike stagey dialogue-heavy dramas
  • You prefer subtlety over overt symbolism and speeches
  • You’re mainly looking for a faithful, minimalist remake

Overview

12 takes the skeleton of 12 Angry Men and stretches it into something broader, stranger, and more overtly national in scope. The jury-room structure still works: each man gets a turn, prejudices surface, and the case slowly becomes a mirror for the society around it. The film’s strongest asset is how confidently it turns a familiar setup into a distinctly Russian argument about guilt, memory, and collective responsibility.

Worth noting

At the same time, the movie can feel overstuffed. The added flashbacks and political context deepen the material for some viewers, but they also dilute the original’s elegant tension. The result is a film that is fascinating more often than it is perfectly controlled, with a few performances and turns that land as melodramatic rather than revelatory.

Bottom line

If you’re open to a remake that is less a copy than a grand reimagining, it’s worth seeing. If you want the cleanest version of the premise, the original remains the sharper and more satisfying experience.
