Curator Review
Verdict
A glossy, whimsical romance with a strong premise and charismatic performances, but it leans heavily on fantasy and charm over psychological depth. It works best as a light, offbeat fable about how desire and imagination can revive a stalled life, even if the script never fully commits to either comedy or drama.
Best for
fans of romantic dramedies with a fairy-tale tone
viewers who enjoy charismatic star turns and old-Hollywood energy
people interested in stories about love, fantasy, and reinvention
audiences open to a soft, playful take on psychiatry and self-mythology
Skip if
you want a grounded or realistic romance
you dislike melodramatic, heightened dialogue
you need consistent tonal control
you are put off by films that prioritize mood and charm over narrative rigor
Overview
Don Juan DeMarco is a movie built on seduction in the broadest sense: not just romantic seduction, but the seduction of a story well told. Its central conceit is irresistible, and the film understands that fantasy can be emotionally useful even when it is obviously untrue. The result is a breezy, often charming romantic fable that is more interested in rekindling feeling than in diagnosing delusion.
Worth noting
Johnny Depp plays the title role with enough swagger and softness to keep the premise afloat, while Marlon Brando brings warmth and weary intelligence to the psychiatrist who gets pulled into the spell. The film’s greatest pleasure is watching its characters slowly loosen up around one another, especially as the doctor’s own life begins to thaw. It has a dreamy, old-fashioned quality that can feel both sincere and a little corny.
Bottom line
What holds it back is a certain thinness beneath the romance. The script prefers aphorisms and atmosphere to complexity, and the tonal blend of comedy, fantasy, and domestic drama is not always seamless. Still, if you’re in the mood for a polished, slightly eccentric 90s romance with a generous heart, it has enough style and feeling to leave a pleasant afterglow.

Have any of you men out there ever wanted to be the perfect womanizer, now you can by following these three simple steps...
1. Say everything with an undying, tender passion.2. Speak in an accent. Does'nt even have to be Italian. Just any accent.3. Look like Johnny Depp.
You can try to follow these steps or just watch this film, pay attention to Depp, and take long notes. Before you know it, you can be a regular Don Juan. Believe it or not, it worked for Brando, and it can work for you too!

Johnny Depp, Marlon Brando & Faye Dunaway star in this romantic comedy drama about a veteran psychiatrist helping a young man claiming to be the legendary Don Juan, getting a new lease of life of his own along the way.
This enchanting little romantic fantasy really sneaks up on you in the tale it spins here; I always like stories where one person comes and slowly wins round and energises people around them, and it’s done well here, putting this heightened… more

Have you ever seen a film in your watchlist or your queue or your viewing carpet and instead of going "Yes! Finally get to watch this awesome movie" or "Oh no! Here we go...", you rather frown upon the title, look at the roof and ask yourself "How did I stumble this stuff?" or "What's this?"
While I can't really point out to this movie (I suspect the fact the Bryan Addams song was nominated for the Oscars had something… more
