Curator Review

Verdict

A visually striking stop-motion fantasy-horror with major cultural significance and real artistic ambition, but the storytelling is uneven and overstuffed. Worth it for the craft, worldbuilding, and Mexican animation milestone; less so if you need a tightly controlled narrative.

Best for

  • stop-motion animation fans
  • viewers who love gothic fantasy and creature design
  • people interested in Mexican cinema and animation milestones
  • audiences who prioritize visual invention over plot precision

Skip if

  • you want a clean, tightly paced story
  • you are allergic to melodrama or busy plotting
  • you prefer lighter family animation
  • you mainly watch for polished narrative clarity

Overview

I Am Frankelda is the kind of film that announces itself as an event: a lavish stop-motion fantasy with a distinctly Mexican identity and a deep love for the grotesque, the whimsical, and the handmade. The craft is the headline here. Every frame seems packed with texture, invention, and personality, and the film’s visual imagination is strong enough to carry a lot of goodwill on its own.

Worth noting

What holds it back is the screenplay, which many viewers found overextended and narratively tangled. The movie has too many ideas, too many characters, and too many tonal lanes competing for space. When it clicks, it feels like a dark fairy tale with real emotional and cultural weight; when it doesn’t, the momentum can sag under its own ambition.

Bottom line

Still, this is exactly the sort of film that matters beyond its flaws. It’s a landmark for Mexican animation, and even skeptics tend to come away admiring the artistry. If you’re the kind of viewer who forgives structural messiness in exchange for bold visual worldbuilding, this is an easy recommendation. If story discipline is non-negotiable, temper expectations.

Corran a verla
