Curator Review

Verdict

A stark, urgent prison-and-police brutality drama that turns a real Italian injustice into a tense, emotionally punishing procedural. It’s less about spectacle than about accumulation: fear, bureaucracy, denial, and a family’s helplessness.

Best for

  • Viewers drawn to true-story injustice dramas
  • Fans of restrained, socially conscious European cinema
  • People who can handle bleak, emotionally heavy material
  • Audiences interested in police misconduct and institutional failure

Skip if

  • You want a cathartic or uplifting ending
  • You prefer fast-paced thrillers over slow-burn realism
  • You’re sensitive to abuse, detention, or medical neglect
  • You want a film that offers clear closure or easy answers

Overview

On My Skin is a severe, bruising account of a real case that became a national scandal in Italy. Alessio Cremonini keeps the focus tight and unsparing, using a controlled style to make the institutional indifference feel even more chilling. The result is not just a courtroom or prison drama, but a portrait of how systems can grind a person down before anyone is willing to admit what happened.

Worth noting

What makes it effective is its refusal to sensationalize. The film is built on dread, not melodrama, and Alessandro Borghi gives Stefano a fragile, human presence that makes the injustice hit harder. The family’s perspective adds a devastating second layer: the horror is not only in the detention itself, but in the long, humiliating struggle to be believed.

Bottom line

This is difficult viewing, but purposeful. It will appeal most to viewers who value films that confront state violence and social failure with seriousness and discipline. If you want a film that leaves you angry, shaken, and thinking about accountability long after it ends, this is a strong recommendation.

75th Venice Film Festival - Orizzonti “Pain is treacherous: it comes out slowly”(“Il dolore è traditore: esce fuori piano piano”) I was 11 years old when Stefano Cucchi’s story was covered by the news here in Italy. As these things tend to go, for a while it was huge, there was a police investigation, it was broadcasted and talked about, but it slowly disappeared. And now, 9 years later, Alessio Cremonini has brought it back in the best way… more
