Nedumaaran Rajangam "Maara" sets out to make the common man fly and in the process takes on the world's most capital intensive industry and several enemies who stand in his way.
An emotionally charged underdog drama with strong performances, rousing momentum, and a crowd-pleasing sense of mission. It does lean into melodrama and biopic uplift, but the craft and conviction carry it through.

Overview
Soorarai Pottru is a swaggering underdog drama that turns a seemingly niche subject into a broad, emotional crowd-pleaser. It follows a man trying to make air travel accessible to ordinary people, and the film sells that dream with conviction, urgency, and a lot of feeling. The performances are the engine: the lead role has grit and volatility, while the supporting cast gives the story warmth and texture.
Worth noting
The film is at its best when it balances aspiration with domestic detail, making the personal stakes feel as important as the public battle. It also has the kind of rousing, populist energy that can make its bigger speeches land hard. At the same time, it is not subtle: the film pushes hard, sometimes too hard, and the melodrama can feel engineered rather than discovered.
Bottom line
Even so, it remains compelling because it knows exactly what kind of experience it wants to deliver. If you’re in the mood for a polished, emotionally direct drama about ambition, bureaucracy, and the cost of chasing a dream, this is an easy recommendation.

Inspired by events from the life of G.R.Gopinath, Sudha Kondara dishes out well fictionalized and dramatized cinematic narrative, that showcases a common man’s big dream to revolutionize the aviation industry by starting a low cost airline, affordable to every other common man. It is intense, emotional and inspiring. Even at places the flow felt a bit inorganic, the sensational performances overpower them.
Performances from Suriya and Aparna solidly… more

Whatever fictionalization Sudha Kongara has done to the real-life story of Captain Gopinath Iyengar, 'Soorarai Pottru' will only remain in the history books as a biopic. However, in the process, what she attempted is also a sly erasure of the anti-caste political history and what it stood against for, which is Brahmanism. This film is an example how melodrama serves as a great tool of audiences' attention. We see every situation is so exaggerated, but still you can’t help but get deeply emotional with the character. His loss becomes your loss, his victory becomes your victory. Only Indian cinema (good filmmakers) can pull this off... and do it so effectively. Surya was perfect in this role, he made me feel the intesity.

'Soorarai pottru' An inspiring tale of an agressive person based on a book 'simply fly'. Excellently written and directed by Sudha kongara. Suriya brings enough grit to his character and had given the finest performance in recent times. Aparna and the supporting actors are great too. Cinematography is excellent, music is soul of the film. Editing is good but could have been better. Another good thing about this film is it won't showcase the lead character as a flawless/god like personality which usually many do in Indian Biopics. Highly recommended!!
A smart, procedural underdog story about challenging entrenched systems with conviction and strategy.
