Verdict
A breezy, funny, character-first superhero movie that works best as a coming-of-age story with action attached. It’s less about spectacle than Peter Parker’s awkward teen life, mentorship, and learning responsibility, with a lively villain and a light, comic tone.
Best for
Viewers who like superhero movies with a strong high-school comedy angle
Fans of underdog coming-of-age stories
Audiences who prefer character charm over nonstop CGI destruction
People who enjoy a lighter, more grounded Marvel entry
Skip if
You want a darker or more emotionally intense Spider-Man story
You dislike teen comedy and school-set plots
You’re looking for big multiverse-scale superhero stakes
You want the most visually inventive action in the franchise
Overview
Spider-Man: Homecoming succeeds by remembering that Peter Parker is a kid first and a superhero second. The movie gets a lot of mileage out of school-club awkwardness, neighborhood-scale stakes, and the thrill of watching someone try to be impressive while still being very obviously a teenager. Tom Holland’s performance keeps the whole thing buoyant and likable.
Worth noting
Michael Keaton gives the film its edge as the Vulture, a villain whose frustrations feel practical and human rather than cosmic. That grounded conflict helps the movie stay nimble, and the Tony Stark mentorship adds both comic friction and a little emotional pressure without swallowing the story.
Bottom line
The action is clean and entertaining, but the real appeal is the tone: funny, warm, and slightly scrappy. It’s one of the MCU’s easiest watches, especially if you like your superhero films to feel like a high-school movie with a web-slinger in the middle of it.

When I grew up reading Spider-Man comics I really related to the parts where Peter Parker got handed state-of-the-art tech to beat up working-class laborers that were screwed over by his billionaire mentor. Fond memories of Devin Faraci saying Michael Keaton was a Bernie Bro when this came out lol. Anyway, pretty cute and funny and well-performed outside of every decision they made to make this look as visually bland as every other one of these movies and strip my fav comic book character of any drama or details about his class status.

the mcu is like the man in my life who I always tell my girlfriends "oh I'm over his ass!" but then he hits me with a "you up?" text and I respond literally seconds later.

Not as tidy, but it continues the franchise’s focus on identity, public image, and the strain of balancing a double life.
