Curator Review
Verdict
A funny, loose sequel that thrives on Peter Sellers’ physical comedy and Blake Edwards’ taste for elaborate visual gags, but it also feels like a partial retread of earlier, sharper entries. If you want Clouseau at full slapstick absurdity, it delivers; if you need a tightly plotted mystery, it may feel thin.
Best for
fans of classic slapstick and visual comedy
viewers who enjoy bumbling-detective farce
people revisiting 1970s studio comedies
fans of Peter Sellers’ comic timing
Skip if
you want a strong mystery over comedy
you dislike repetition in sequels
you prefer modern pacing and cleaner plotting
you are not in the mood for broad, physical humor
Overview
The Return of the Pink Panther is built around one thing: the pleasure of watching Peter Sellers turn incompetence into an art form. Blake Edwards stages the comedy with a patient, almost balletic sense of timing, letting small mistakes snowball into huge disasters. The result is often very funny, especially when the film leans into pure physical chaos rather than the mystery itself.
Worth noting
As a sequel, though, it is more comfortable than surprising. The plot is mostly a framework for gags, and some of the material feels like a familiar rerun of earlier Clouseau business. Still, the movie has enough energy, elegance, and invention to keep the formula afloat, and the return of the character’s signature routines gives it a nostalgic charge.
Bottom line
If you come for plot, you may leave underwhelmed. If you come for pratfalls, mangled logic, and a detective who can ruin any room he enters, it’s an easy recommendation for a light night. It’s not the series at its peak, but it remains a polished showcase for one of comedy’s great screen clowns.

“The Return of the Pink Panther” is a double dip on what made the series’ first installments so iconic. The problem is - the result is akin to a jewel thief robbing the same bank twice.
The second time around… the vault just turns up empty.
Retreading familiar humor grounds isn’t necessarily a felony crime that will land a comedy sequel in movie jail. Especially when the same legendary team of Peter Sellers and Blake Edwards is involved.
But what… more

"I must leave. This hotel is deteriorating rapidly."
A minor comeback for Sellers/Edwards after their absence from 1968's Inspector Clouseau, The Return of the Pink Panther sees the Inspector and the Pink Panther dragged into the 1970s, skidding and flailing along the way. And while not as slickly conceived as A Shot in the Dark, Return... more than makes up for any plot-related deficiencies with some hysterical comedy sequences.
Granted, Clouseau has visibly devolved as a character: where once he… more

"Do I detect something in your voice that says I am in disfavor with you?"
"Yes. I wish you were dead."
For years I thought I'd seen this one but it turns out I hadn't seen more than a few minutes at most. It's extremely funny, the origin point of what I consider the funniest running (or flying, in this case) Clouseau gag: The slow-motion calamity during his fights with Cato. A fun mind-warping detail is the fact that when… more

Rest in peace, Christopher Plummer - a multitalented actor in numerous genres, a childhood crush of mine in this film, an elegant gentleman until the very end.

A glamorous mystery with comedy, romance, and a breezy, twisty structure.
